Hearing His Voice

People have asked me how I know when God is speaking to me. The answer to that is really pretty simple. Let’s use the example of friendship to draw a parallel. Have you ever had a really close friend? Let’s say you are in a public place and your friend happens to be there too, but you are completely unaware of it. Now, imagine walking into the bathroom with your friend already in one of the stalls with the doors closed. Now, keep in mind neither of you know the other is present. If this friend is someone you’ve spent time with on regular basis, all she would have to do is cough, clear her throat, hum, or speak for you to immediately know that it was, in fact, her. That recognition could only come from regular time spent with her. It’s the exact same way with God. The more time we spend with Him, the more intimate our relationship with Him becomes. With that intimacy comes being able to recognize His voice without actually seeing Him face to face.

Sometimes He uses people and circumsatances to speak to us.  If we are familiar with Him and we’ve been discussing specifics with Him in prayer, we are very likely to recognize Him when we do see Him or hear Him.  I call those  moments God encounters.  If you’ve never had one, pray for one.  They are incredible!  I always pray for Him to give me spiritual eyes and ears to see and hear Him.  One more way he speaks clearly is through His word.  When I spend time with Him in His word and ask him to make it come alive for me and in me, He is always faithful to do it!

“When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”   John 10:4

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”  Revelation 3:20

This reminds me of a couple of songs.

“Word of God Speak”  by Mercy Me

I’m finding myself at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it’s okay
The last thing I need is to be heard
But to hear what You would say

Word of God speak
Would You pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your majesty
To be still and know
That You’re in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In Your holiness
Word of God speak

I’m finding myself in the midst of You
Beyond the music, beyond the noise
All that I need is to be with You
And in the quiet hear Your voice

“Who Am I? ”  by Point of Grace

Chorus- Who am i that you would love me so gently?
Who am i that you would recognize my name?
Lord who am i that you would speak to me so softly
Conversation with the love most high who am i

Hey Rivera! Just wanted to log on to see what your website was about and I’ve read some wonderful insights God’s given you! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us (me!). I especially like your illustration of our recognizing God’s voice as we would a friend we know intimately. If we will only take the time to develop that type of intimacy with God, then we will always hear Him because He is never far from us.

You are a very gifted singer, and now I know you are a very gifted writer! “I” think you need to be on the devotions’ team at The Cove! Pray about it, ok?

    Love you much!
