Some Christ-followers confuse the gift of the Spirit and spiritual gifts. Every believer in Jesus Christ has been given the gift (singular) of the Holy Spirit. When we first believe, He comes to live in our hearts. And what a gift He is! So, what are spiritual gifts and how are they different? If we look at 1 Corinthians 12:1 (KJV), “spiritual” comes from the Greek word (ton pneumatikon), meaning controlled by the Spirit. Then in verse 4, “gifts” comes from the word (charisma, root word charis), meaning grace. Spiritual gifts are given to us by the Holy Spirit by His grace. So we can’t earn them. More often than not, believers are given more than one spiritual gift. Are those with numerous gifts more spiritually mature or closer to God than those with fewer? Not at all! These gifts are given by grace as He determines.
