Powerful Words Communicated by Listening Ears

I was leaning in.  The mirror stared back as I put on mascara.  I could hear my children in the background.  Haley said, “I don’t know why, I’m just not feeling motivated to do it.”  Every ounce of me wanted to interrogate.  WHAT was she not motivated to do?  But God said no.  So I refrained.

I listened.

Hunter responded, “Well if you set your mind to it, you can do anything.  Especially you Haley!  Especially! You!!  I know you.  And I know you can do anything.  You have to just decide that you want to.”

God overwhelmed me with His presence and presents in that moment.  What a gift Hunter was to his little sister.  What a gift that was to me.

The simplest moments are gifts aren’t they, especially when we listen?  The strumming of guitar practice.  Giggles over bathroom humor.  Sweet conversations of encouragement are precious mom-gifts.

I was so glad I didn’t pipe in.  Thankful God nudged me to keep quiet.

Hunter’s words brought more life than mine would’ve.  He encouraged.  My questioning on the other hand probably would’ve been accusatory or condemning.  Maybe not, but probably.  Even if I didn’t mean it that way, she may have taken it that way!

Words… penetrating, powerful, like arrows piercing a target.  They hit straight to the soul with life or death.  We sling them like weapons.  And hold them like hidden treasure.  But the giving of them can heal like medicine.

I could hear her smile through her tone.  Almost bouncing, she said “Thanks Hunter.”  Then my little butterfly flitted out of the room… soaring.

And like Mary with her baby God-child, I pondered these things {these God-treasures} in my heart without laying eyes or words on the scene… just ears.  Listening.

“Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways.”  Proverbs 8:32

“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.”  Proverbs 21:23
