One Word: that time again

Shine

I’ve missed hanging out with you.  Book writing has consumed my time lately.   Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks for more about the book release!  I can’t wait to reveal it to you!

As you know, every year I encourage my readers to join me in asking God for one word.  It’s like having a theme word for the year.  Typically it’s a word He’s been speaking to you.  This isn’t a word you make up because you think it sounds good.  Don’t choose a word you want.   Pray and ask.  Listen for His voice, and let God choose your word.

Though I’ve done this for several years, I admit it was NOT my idea.  Mike Ashcraft at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC started it.  He even wrote a book about it.

Maybe you’re as curious about my one word as I am yours.   Honestly it is tough for me to pick just one.  So often God speaks more than one word to me at a time.  And I love all of His words.  Last year mine was STAND.  The year before was GO.  I’ve had two this year that I’ve gone back and forth between.  I think I’ve finally settled that it is…

drum roll please…

SHINE.

On several different occasions, with different verses each time, He spoke SHINE!!!

Arise, shine;  For your light has come!  And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.  ~Isaiah 60:1

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  ~Matthew 5:16

Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?  Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.

If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,  If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.  The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.  ~Isaiah 58:6-11

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  ~2 Corinthians 4:6

Yes I’m certain God is telling me to be His light and to SHINE.  (Of course He wants us ALL to shine His light in the darkness.)

Don’t keep me in suspense.  What’s YOUR one word?

I think it is JOY. This past year has been a particularly difficult one of loss, grief and challenges, but someone recently prayed for me and God said he would be renewing my husband’s and my joy this coming year. I’m so ready. I see it peeking through in little places. He gives us joy for mourning and beauty for ashes. I love that. God is good. Can’t wait to hear about your new book!

My word for 2014 is FORGIVE. Jesus forgives us every day, can we do less? When you forgive it takes a lot of stress out of your life and you can move on. Lack of a forgiving heart just causes misery for the one who is unforgiving. Forgive and a huge weight is taken off you.

My word is change! I’m changing careers this year and leaving behind sales after 20 years! I’m excited to finish my counseling degree and use it to help hurting children. It’s been a 4 year journey as you know. And I’m ready to CHANGE through Him. 🙂

So glad your book is finished. Can’t wait to read it. I was praying for you around Christmas. Sending love!

I can’t think of a more appropriate word for this season for you Lisa! Awesome! God has big and beautiful things in store through the change.

Thank you for prayers for the book! God is faithful! Love you friend.

I love your word! It’s actually something like what I was meditating on recently. From John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they know You the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I want my life to be a light that reveals Him to all who know me.
But I won’t borrow you word-for this year, at least. My word for this year is bow. Beginning with a study that begins next week, I will be seeking His guidance to learn what it means to live a life of worship, and to bow my whole life before Him. I’m excited for this journey this year!
