I received a text from my friend, Allison, that read, “I gave my friend, Corrie, your book as a gift. She called me weeping, saying you put into words what her heart felt but couldn’t express after the loss of her son.” It was so sweet to my heart. Chapter 7 —“Held”— was the one that gripped her, and it was birthed out of obvious pain for me.
Her feedback was a true gift. Writing this book wasn’t easy and definitely was not something I did to add to a list of accomplishments, or a bucket-list. I wrote because God said to write. I don’t even have a bucket-list. I believe if I follow God each step of the way, I don’t need one. His bucket-list for me is much greater than any I could imagine on my own.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” ~Ephesians 3:20-21
Allison went on to tell me her friend would be turning 93 in the next few weeks. To my surprise and delight, one thing she wanted for her birthday was to meet me. Both of my grandmothers have passed, so this was entirely precious to my heart and we began making arrangements for me to meet her.
When we met, her first words were, “I’m no authority, but I think your writing is wonderful. And you’re gorgeous!”
So sweet! I graciously thanked her for her kind words and assured her, “Jesus is the final Authority, and you have Him living inside you. I think that makes you an authority!”
I shared with her about going to get my nails painted that morning for her special day. I admitted, “I’m typically a ‘red’ girl.” As I stood looking over all the colors, I felt like God wanted me to choose pale pink. This led me into a Jesus conversation with the lady doing my nails (another story for another day). Pink it was! When I first laid eyes on Corrie, she was dressed in pale pink from head to toe. We matched! What a sweet God gift for us both.
I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. She did NOT look 93 years old, maybe more like 73. I delighted in making her day special. She was spunky like I imagine myself at 93. I was in the company of two beauties. Allison and Corrie are both exquisite women who exude Jesus.
We went to her favorite restaurant for lunch where a gentleman, who overheard Corrie praying to bless our meal, came over and thanked her for her willingness and boldness to pray in public. When it was nearing time to go, we were informed our bill had already been paid by the kind man. Corrie said, “I didn’t know that man, but he was awfully sweet.”
I smiled and said, “God loves doting on His girls. He delights to delight in us. He’s telling you ‘Happy Birthday’ dear Corrie!”
We went back to her house and shared a sweet prayer time before parting ways. As we took a few pictures and prepared to go, I noticed her table where she kept her journaling and reading material. All the greats like John François Fénelon (“Christian Perfection”), Andrew Murray (“Humility” and “Absolute Surrender”), Frances J. Roberts (“Come Away My Beloved”), Brother Lawrence (“Practice of His Presence”), and Billy Graham’s devotional were on her table. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Sitting on top of these was my book, “Intimacy.” She had started reading it for the second time. Billy Graham and I were the only two on her table who hadn’t passed on the be with Jesus. I thought, Wow, how special!
My 93 year-old friend said she was so honored and pleased to meet me, but truthfully the honor was all mine. It was a surreal, simply profound, Holy Spirit-filled time.
God crosses our paths with people, and sometimes we leave them better than we came to them. That’s precisely what happened, I left Corrie better. She left her print on me.
